Bai Shao—Radix Paeoniae
This herb builds blood, and helps counter some of the possible imbalances of the other ingredients. Bai Shao enters the Liver and Spleen meridians, is cool in nature, and tastes bitter and sour.
Sheng Di Huang—Radix Rehmanniae Glutinosae
This is one of the main nourishers of Yin and Blood and is the chief herb in this formula. It is sweet, slightly bitter, and cold, and enters the Heart, Liver, and Kidney meridians.
Hong Shen—Radix Ginseng
This herb moves energy very well, keeping the substance of the blood moving about to create a feeling of increased central energy. It enters the spleen and Lung meridians, is slightly warm in nature, and tastes sweet and slightly bitter.
Rou Gui – Cinnamomi Cassiae
This herb adjusts the Nutritive and Protective Qi levels, Warms the Channels and disperses Cold: it is used for Wind Cold Damp Painful Obstruction in the joints and limbs, especially the shoulders. It tends to regulate temperature and has a mild antipyretic effect, primarily by vasodilatation. It is acrid, sweet and warm and enters the Lung and Bladder channels.
Niu Xi – Achyranthis Bidentatae
This herb invigorates the blood and expels congealed blood. It strengthens the sinews and bones and benefits the joints: used for pain and soreness affecting the lower back and knees from Deficiency. It tonifies and nourishes the Liver and Kidneys. It is bitter, sour, neutral and enters the Liver and Kidney Channels.
Qin Jiao – Gentianae Macrophyllae
This is a good herb for relieving painful obstruction and muscle cramping, especially in the extremities. It is bitter, acrid, neutral and enters Liver, Stomach, Gall Bladder.
Du Zhong – Cortex Eucoommiae Ulmoidis
This herb Tonifies the Liver and Kidneys, strengthens the sinews and bones with such symptoms as weak, sore, or painful lover back and knees with fatigue. It aids smooth flow of Qi and Blood and is used to promote circulation. It is sweet, slightly acrid, warm and enters the Liver and Kidney channels.
