Have you noticed that diabetes type 2, also called insulin resistance, has become almost an epidemic? And there seems to be no sign of it stopping. Whereas it used to occur in later life (50s or 60s), now it’s appearing in children as young as ten. Why?
The reasons are fairly obvious: poor dietary choices and too little exercise. The typical North American diet is high in sugar, “bad” fats, salt, and over-processed and refined foods (and conversely, low in complex grains, good quality fat and protein, and fresh fruits and vegetables). The result: chronic degenerative diseases, with diabetes type 2 high on the list.
So, the first approach is one of dietary change. Eat a wholesome, balanced diet, one that focuses upon fresh and minimally processed foods. Decrease your sugar and flour consumption. The more that you can stay away from prepackaged foods, the better your health will be.
Second, we need to ensure adequate exercise. Resistance-type exercises, including walking up gentle slopes and swimming, are excellent. Start slowly and gradually work up to 30-45 minutes a day, progressing a little week-by-week. Be gentle with yourself, and it’s best to undertake an exercise program under the guidance of your physician.
