Polyquaternium-7 is seen as a colorless or pale yellow liquid when it sits in room temperature. Polyquaternium is considered as one of the International Nomenclature for Cosmetic Ingredients which is a designation for polycationic polymers mostly used in many personal care products. There are currently 37 polymers in this family and each one has a particular property that makes it important with in a particular industry.
Polyquaternium-7 has a chemical identity that may be described as a copolymer of acrylamide and diallyldimethylammonium chloride. It is considered safe to use as an ingredient for cosmetics and other personal skin and hair care products by the Cosmetics Ingredient Review (CIR) Expert Panel.
History and Origin
Polyquaternium-7 belongs to a family of polycationic polymers that are specifically used for many industries but it is basically used as a catatonic conditioner for hair and also as an effective moisturizing ingredient for skin.
The use of Polyquaternium-7 was unheard of during the ancient times. However, hair and skin care was already done by ancient cultures. Hair care was made possible through the use of essential oils, fruit extracts and herbs. This formulation made hair silky soft and was easy to detangle.
Polyquaternium-7 is commonly used during modern times as a hair conditioning agent. It is an active ingredient in shampoos and conditioners since it has the ability to remove tangles and to straighten unruly hair. It is also an ingredient in spray on conditioners and also for leave on conditioners to make hair silky soft and easy to comb. Dry hair will benefit so much from hair care products with Polyquaternium-7 since it can add shine to an otherwise dull hair.
Products with Polyquaternium-7 is not just for dry hair but may also be perfect for normal hair care types that can prevent hair dullness and damage. It is also a part of hair dyes, hair mousse and hair sprays. The positive charge of Polyquaternium-7 and other polymers neutralizes the negative charge of hair protein and as a result, hair is flat and smooth.
Polyquaternium-7 in hair care products is considered to be quite safe. There are no notable side effects whatsoever with regular use of hair care products that contain this chemical. The Cosmetics Ingredient Review (CIR) Expert Panel has cited that Polyquaternium-7 is generally safe to use as an ingredient in both cosmetics and in skin and hair care products.
Pregnant and breastfeeding women can use products with Polyquaternium-7 even on a daily basis as it is safe for use by this demographic. Being safe to use, it may also be perfect for babies who have extra sensitive skin. People with sensitive skin may also benefit from the conditioning property of this chemical on hair and the moisturizing effect on skin.
Polyquaternium-7 may still cause a small number people within today’s population to have minor skin irritation when using products that have this formulation. It is definitely important to consult a dermatologist for any untoward skin reaction to skin or hair care products with Polyquaternium-7. If you are exposed to chemicals at work, always wear protective equipment to prevent accidental spills and splashes from this chemical.
