Sleep deprivation is a condition when a person is not getting enough sleep. This condition can be an acute or chronic health condition that can cause devastating effects. Humans need sleep as well as all living things; it is in sleep when tissues and cells are repaired and it is also thought that it is in sleep that necessary hormones are released like the human growth hormone. There are many studies regarding the effects of sleep deprivation in humans and animals. It has been seen that humans may never endure long period of sleep deprivation. This can cause physical, cognitive and psychological problems. Sleep deprivation for a long period of time can cause death in lab animals.

Causes of Sleep Deprivation

There may be clinical causes of sleep deprivation and also psychological factors that can lead to this sleep problem:

  • Sleep apnea is an obstruction in the airway passages that can reduce the amount of airflow which can worsen when a person is asleep. This condition can significantly cause sleep deprivation.
  • Drugs that stimulate the nervous system can also cause sleep deprivation. Drugs like ethamphetamine is the most commonly abused drug that can cause a person to be awake for 3 to 15 days when used for repeated doses.
  • Stress due to school work and due to work in particular can also cause sleep deprivation. The sleeping habits of college students has been the subject of a survey by the National Sleep Foundation and have resulted in a decreasing amount of sleep starting from the first few years of a college student’s life.

Work on the other hand may also cause this condition. Deadlines, working in shifting schedules, overseas travel and many other grueling demands of work can all lead to less sleep. Familial stress can also result in less sleep. This is common in parents who may struggle to make ends meet, may have to work more than one jobs or for longer periods just to be able to financially survive.

Symptoms of Sleep Deprivation

Sleep deprivation has these hallmark symptoms:

  • Irritability wherein the smallest thing can be very trivial.
  • The overall feeling of tiredness and the nagging feeling of weakness is a common symptom.
  • Inability to concentrate is also more pronounced along with learning new tasks and activities.
  • Memory loss is also seen and sometimes it is described as hazy memory which results in the inability to remember things that happen an hour or even minutes ago
  • Appetite changes or loss of appetite.

Treatments of Sleep Deprivation

Medication to induce sleep may be prescribed along with alternative remedies like relaxation, meditation and even yoga. Planning your daily activities may help schedule everything to make room for sleep. Organize your room to make it more conducive for sleep; place all work related objects in another room to reduce distractions and get you to sleep right away.
