American Ginseng Root

Description

American Ginseng Root contains ginsenosides, substances that provide medicinal properties to ginseng. American Ginseng Root is knotted and light tan in color that usually looks like a human figure with gristly shoots for its legs and arms.

The American ginseng plant’s leaves grow in a loop around a straight stem. Its flowers are yellowish-green that are umbrella-shaped with red berries in the center. The age of the plant is determined by the wrinkles around the neck of the American Ginseng Root. The age of the plant is crucial since the plant should be used once it has grown for at least six years.

American Ginseng Root is very expensive and hard to find in the wild. Today, it is being cultivated on farms in order to protect wild American ginseng from being overharvested.

History and Origin

The American Ginseng Root is found in the central and eastern hardwood forests of the Appalachian Mountains extending northward into Eastern Canada. Ginseng favors a cool temperate weather and does best in moist, rich, and well-drained woods that are sloping.
