Angelica Root aka Dang Gui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis)

Angelica Root, also known in Chinese as Dang Gui is known as the female version of Ginseng and it is found in China. It is very popular in China and its root is used widely. It has been used for thousands of years as a treatment for improved menstrual health in women who are having difficulties from excessive flow or bringing on their menstrual flow. It contains good levels of vitamin B12 and ferullic acid.


Angelica sinensis is used in Traditional Chinese Medicine to treat gynecological problems. However, it also has anti-inflammatory and antiseptic properties and is used as an analgesic and antispasmodic. Traditionally this herb was used to cure urinary tract infections and improve the blood flow of different parts of the body. It was often used to relieve bronchitis and other respiratory ailments. Chinese medicine combines Angelica Root with other herbs to increase its potency, such as being combined with Astragalus to treat exhaustion and prevent diarrhea. It can also be cooked with Ginger to help recover faster after childbirth. Combing Dang Gui with peony, foxglove root and liguisticum creates the long used Si Wu Tang formula, or Blood Builder, for missed periods and excessive menstrual flows. A tonic can be combined with seeds from the cannabis plant and walnuts to relieve a sufferer of chronic constipation from unbalanced Qi and blood levels.

Presently we can find this herbal in moist fields in North America, Asia and Europe and it is often cultivated as a garden plant. In Western medicine it is often used for pains, cuts, sores, aches, blood poisoning and any kind of infection. The root must first be cut and then boiled in hot water. Then the root is placed on the wound or sore muscle. However, Angelica Root also has therapeutic properties such as being a stimulant, tonic, and diuretic.

In America it is used to relieve the pain of a decayed tooth and it is considered a herb that improves wellness and mentality. Around the world its root is used as a flavor in cigarette tobacco and as essential oil extracts. Medicine uses worldwide include the treating of heartburn, reducing tension, curing headaches and treating colds.

Generally Angelica Root is a good remedy for common colds and it is used as a stimulating expectorant of heavy phlegm and breathing troubles.

Forms of Angelica Root

There are two forms of dang gui: The first is the root body, and it is called dang gui shen and is considered a blood builder. The second is the branch and it is called dang gui tail. The tail is used more often for pain.

It is available from stores and pharmacies and can be given by a herbalist or naturopathic physician. It can be found in form of capsules, root or spice.

Side Effects

Generally, Angelica Root is a safe herb with no toxic reactions. Side effects are extremely rare. Usually people with gastrointestinal disease may have diarrhea and people who suffer with blood thickness may have an increased risk of bleeding. It is not advised for use during pregnancy. Always consult a physician or herbal expert before using any herbal remedy.
