Description

Halitosis or bad breath is a condition described as having a distinct, foul-smelling breath. It is caused by many factors with poor dental hygiene as one of the most common. It is recommended that a person brushes and flosses his teeth every after a meal but due to a hectic schedule and a busy lifestyle, these hygienic activities are mostly overlooked.

  • Gum disease or periodontal disease can also cause bad breath as harmful bacteria in the mouth release toxins that irritate gums. Gum disease must be diagnosed and treated immediately to reduce complications.
  • Yeast infections also cause bad breath. Yeast can proliferate in the oral cavity when beneficial bacteria are not enough or not present at all.
  • Medications used to treat health problems and illnesses may also cause bad breath.
  • Dryness in the mouth caused by mouth breathing or a clinical condition may also increase a person’s risk of developing bad breath.
  • Illnesses also cause halitosis. Upper respiratory tract infections, post nasal drip, diabetes and acid reflux can all cause bad breath to develop and may only be removed after the specific illness is completely treated.
