Chuan Xin Lian
Herbs play an important role in traditional Chinese medicine. Some of them are famous the world over, while others are quite obscure. Herbs like ginseng are used in thousands of popular products throughout the world. But have you ever heard of Chuan Xin Lian?
What is Chuan Xin Lian?
Commonly sold as Andrographis Anti-inflammatory tablets, the popular supplement is a combination of three herbs that have known antiviral, antibacterial, and anti-inflammatory properties. The chief ingredient in this cocktail is Chuan Xin Lian or Andrographis Paniculata.
What does Chuan Xin Lian do?
The main reason that people all over the world are we are talking about this herb today is because it is reduces inflammation, i.e., it is an anti-inflammatory herb. This means that it can alleviate inflammation that is the result of an injury or an infection. Everything from a sprained ankle to a serious wound can be treated with anti-inflammatory medications or with Chuan Xin Lian.
Herbalists tell us that Chuan Xin Lian can also be used to relieve swollen glands, sore throats, viral and bacterial infections, and damaged or swollen tissue. The herb is said to clear toxins, heat, reduce inflammation, and even cool the blood.
Does Chuan Xin Lian work?
Like many popular herbs, its efficacy as a medical treatment has not been confirmed by medical scientists. However, there have been encouraging studies with regard to the herb’s purported antibacterial properties in alternative medicine. We know, for instance, that Chuan Xin Lian has been shown to inhibit the spread of Streptococcus and Staphylococcus, which are organisms that can cause serious infections.
In its pure form, Chuan Xin Lian is not particularly tasty. In fact, the Chinese translation is “pierce the heart lotus,” which means that it is so bitter that it actually “pierces the heart.” Fortunately, the herb can be purchased in tablet form as a dietary supplement. Chuan Xin Lian is one of the most popular ingredients amongst Chinese herbal supplements.
Possible Side Effects of Chuan Xin Lian
Andrographis tablets are safe when they are used by adults for a relatively short period of time. Testing has not revealed whether they are safe when taken over a protracted period, i.e., over three months. The herb has been shown to cause relatively minor side effects like Headaches, runny nose, Fatigue, and skin rashes. An extremely small percentage of users report more serious side effects, namely, vomiting, diarrhea, and loss of appetite. When taken in extremely high doses, Chuan Xin Lian can cause serious allergic reactions that require immediate medical attention.
It is also important to note that the herb may cause fertility problems. Like many alternative herbal medicines, Andrographis tablets have not been thoroughly tested on humans. But animal research strongly suggests that the Chuan Xin Lian herb may make it harder to conceive, especially when it is taken continuously for more than three months.
Users should take no more than six pills a day. It is extremely important to follow the directions on the label and to contact your doctor or herbalist if you experience any significant or prolonged side effects. As we mentioned, the supplement should not be taken for more than three months at a time.
