L-Cysteine is a naturally occurring amino acid that is required for one to absorb the nutrients from their food properly. L-cysteine is considered the most important sulfur containing amino acid. It is found in hair and nails naturally in high amounts. This amino acid is not an essential one, so it is not generally required for good health. However there are some cases where L-cysteine is required by some elderly people, infants, people with metabolic diseases and those suffering from malnutrition for better nutrition absorption.
What is L-Cysteine Used For?
The main goal of cysteine is to facilitate the stomach lining's health and to keep the gastrointestinal tract in good health. The reason why this amino acid is not an essential amino acid is because it is readily available in numerous high protein foods. These foods many people have available on a regular basis. Some elderly people, infants and people in third world countries need an additional supplement of L-cystiene because their diets are lacking in the source. L-cysteine can be found in many high protein foods today such as chicken, pork, eggs, garlic, red pepper, and oats, just to name a few sources. Even though L-cysteine is abundant in a high protein state in many foods, it is not a good idea to over saturate your diet with it. L-cysteine can be very toxic if too much is ingested.
How Does It Work?
L-cysteine contains sulfur and is extremely useful in assisting the body in the biochemical processes necessary to sustain life. In other words it aids the body in getting rid of toxins while also protecting the cells from radiation that causes damage and mutations to occur at the cellular level. L-cysteine can be used as a source of energy since it is able to be converted to glucose.
L-cysteine has many clinical applications in the medical world for treatments of many metabolic diseases and health issues. For rheumatoid arthritis sufferers, mutagenic cancers, and arthrosclerosis, L-cysteine can be used to successfully relive the symptoms and treat the diseases. Cysteine is supplemented to the treatment along with vitamin B6 to help the body organically produce additional cysteine to fight the damage caused at the cellular level. L-cysteine aids in the absorption of iron, it negates the harmful radical metals that float in the body, it is very useful and successful in helping with weight loss, and a whole slew of medical benefits. In fact they are encouraged to lower their protein intake because L-cysteine interferes with the body's production of insulin and causes many complications with people with kidney disorders.
There is still much research being done on the use, benefits and side effects from supplemental use of L-cysteine. Most research and studies have been very promising thus far and further enforce the theory that L-cysteine enhances the body's functions and one's overall health. Even though it is not an essential amino acid, it certainly has the functions and promise of the essential amino acids.
