Lactobacillus bulgaricus, previously classified as Lactobacillus delbrueckii subspecies bulgaricus; is a beneficial bacterium that is primarily used in the proper manufacturing of yoghurt and cheeses. It can be found in products that are naturally fermented. It is a rod shaped Gram-positive bacteria that requires a low pH level to grow and flourish effectively.
Lactobacillus bulgaricus is used together with Streptococcus thermophilus for making yoghurt. It is often called beneficial bacteria as it is also used to kill bad bacteria and yeast infections as well. This method is called Probiotics treatment and it is very much used in modern medicine.
History and Origin
Lactobacillus bulgaricus was first discovered by a Bulgarian doctor named Stamen Grigorov in 1905.
