The good news of becoming a new mom brings with it some bad symptoms as well. The tremendous changes that the body goes through in terms of physical and hormonal upheavals bring discomfort and distress. One of the most common of such symptom is fatigue. It starts in early weeks of pregnancy and lasts for the entire tenure until birth and a little after that too. Because the extra weight and the physical sensitivity of the body, the pregnant women becomes frequently and easily tired. She feels exhausted after small errands or for standing or walking for small durations. The energy levels seem to take a downturn and the strain bearing capacity also decreases. Though these are perfectly normal but with proper care the symptoms can be minimized.
Changes in hormones level of the body during the first trimester cause nausea and vomiting. This in turn causes fatigue. The main hormone that undergoes considerable increment is progesterone.

In the third trimester due to increased body weight, aches, swellings and heartburn follow. These continuous symptoms also cause the body to become exhausted easily.
The labor and delivery of the baby is a tiring exercise in itself. The pre contractions and the strength needed for continue pushes for baby delivery makes the new mom considerably tired. If the symptoms of mood swings and anxiety continue for long periods after the birth of the baby, it may be postpartum depression.
Signs and Symptoms
Symptoms include getting tired easily. Swelling in ankles and legs can also occur after long standing due to water retention. The pregnant women get easily exhausted after any mental or physical exertion. This fatigue is continued throughout the pregnancy tenure in varying degrees. It is high especially during first and third trimester. Also it is heavy during labor as giving birth is a physically challenging task in itself. Tiredness also extends for some time after delivery of the baby in most women as taking care of the young one renders sleepless nights with little rest.
As this is not a disease and also because it is related to a sensitive issue like pregnancy, there is not direct treatment for the treatment of fatigue. Only adequate vitamin and mineral tablets are prescribed by the doctor to prevent deficiency of the essential minerals during pregnancy and help in the development of the baby. These supplements help to boost up the energy levels too and fight fatigue.

Some self care tips include drinking lots of water and eat well balanced healthy diet comprising of fruits, vegetables and whole foods.
