Psoriasis is a skin disease which affects the cycle of the skin. It makes the cells build fastly on the surface of the skin. They form thick silver scales that are itchy in nature and dry and red patches which give rise to lots of pain. This skin problem is a persistent and long lasting disorder. It mainly affects the scalp, face, lower back, elbows, knees, fingernails, toenails and soles of the feet. This distress may also occur in the inner parts of the mouth and genitals. The different types of psoriasis are described below: Plaque psoriasis- In this form, raised red patches with silvery scales occur. Here, scales get formed due to the build-up of dead scales. It mainly arises on scalp, elbows and knees.
Guttate psoriasis- It gives rise to tiny red dots and lesions that have scaling. This one can occur after a bacterial or viral infection. Inverse psoriasis- This form is detected by the presence of smooth red patches which arise without scaling. In this distress, the dieased part becomes irritated because of sweating and rubbing of the skin. It mainly occurs in the folds of the skin, like armpit, and on the breast or groin areas. Pustular psoriasis- Pustular psoriasis occur when there arises blisters that are filled with pus.
Psoriatic arthritis- This type of psoriasis causes redness and swelling on the elbows, hands, knees, feet, hips and spine. It even gives rise to joint pain and stiffness.
Nail psoriasis- It affects the fingernails and toenails. Due to this illness, the nails may turn thick and yellow and may fall out eventually.
Some of the common causes of psoriasis are given below:
1. A change in the climate serves to the problem of psoriasis. 2. An excessive intake of alcohol consumption 3. Some infections like upper respiratory infections (for e.gcolds,tonsillitis, sinusitis and strep throat) can cause this skin disease. 4. Some skin disorders 5. Certain skin injury 6. Smoking cigarette 7. The attack of stress and anxiety 8. Exposure to sun 9. Taking certain medicines like beta-blockers and lithium 10. A weakened immune system 11. Alcoholism or alcohol abuse 12. Severe weahter changes like extreme hot or cold. 13. Drinking unhealthy beverages 14. Family history of psoriasis or genetics 15. Having a weakened immune system because of the problems of HIV and AIDs or taking steroid medications
Signs and Symptoms
Some of the main signs and symptoms of psoriasis are described below:-
1. There may occur red patches which are covered with silvery scales on the knees, scalp, elbows, hands, nails, feet and lower back. 2. Due to the formation of skin lesions, the skin may develop cracks and redness 3. Bleeding may occur on the affected parts of the skin. 4. Itching may disturb the diseased portions. 5. There may arise some nail abnormalities like yellowing of the fingernails and toenails, seperation at the end of the nails and the occurence of tiny pits on the nails. 6. Lots of joint pain and aches may arise 7. At times, burning and discharge from the eyes may arise and some lesions get formed on the genitalia.
The treament option depends on the form of psoriasis, age, sex, the severity of this disease and the lifesytle of a person. Based on this, there are mainly three types of treatments- topical therapy (here medications are applied to the skin), phototherapy (its also called light therapy) and systemic therapy (here medications are given as a pill or injection). However, learn some fine holistic treatments to control this illness.
Some lifestyle changes help to treat the problem of psoriasis. Here is their description:
Take bath daily- Taking bath daily helps you remove scales and soothe down an inflamed skin. You can add bath oil, colloidal oatmeal, Epsom salts or Dead Sea salts to the water and soak your body in it for about 15 minutes. Do not use hot water and harsh chemical soaps as they can aggravate this illness. Use only lukewarm water and mild soaps.
Use moisturizer- Apply a good moisturier after taking bath. It will soothe down the burning sensation from the affected parts of the skin.
Cover the diseased parts- Cover the diseased areas while going out in the sun as it will protect your skin from getting burned and becoming more distressed. Avoid alcohol and smoking- The consumption of alcohol and smoking cigarette interferes with the proper working of the medications used to heal psoriasis. So, avoid such habits.
Eat a healthy diet- Eat only a healthy diet. It includes fruits, vegetables and whole grains.
