Rhodiola Rosea (Artic Rose Root Extract)

Rhodiola Rosea, also known as Golden Root and Arctic Rose Extract, grows mainly on mountains and in areas up to 5000 ft. in elevation. In the United States it can be found in the Rocky Mountain region as well as in the Carpathian Mountains in Europe. It thrives best in cold climates and is rarely found in warm weather areas. Arctic rose is one of the few plants that has been known to grow in the Arctic region and hence the name Artic Rose. The plant itself belongs to the Crassulaceae family of plants and can grow up to 34 cm in height. The Artic Rose plant produces yellow flowers and has blue-green leaves.

History of Arctic Rose Extract

Growing in Iceland, the arctic rose was highly respected and used by the Vikings thousands of years ago. The plant was thought of as a “magical” plant and was taken on long journeys by the Vikings to protect them and bring them home safe. Arctic rose extract was also used in China and Tibet, as it grows in the Himalayas and the Alps. Arctic rose extract was thought by the Tibetans to give wisdom and a long and healthy life. The flower of the plant was removed and the stem was chewed on. Arctic rose also grows on the Siberian fields and has been used as a medical plant in Russia since 1969. Numerous clinical studies have been performed in Russia to study the benefits of this plant. In Roman times it was used to cure Headaches and as a tea to calm the nerves.

Potential Side Effects

Arctic rose extract should be taken in small doses. When taken in small doses, no side effects have been reported. However, if taken in high doses arctic rose extract can cause fatigue, irritability and insomnia. Arctic rose should not be taken in high doses during a prolonged period of time.
