The Basics of Electrolysis

Electrolysis is a process in which a needle is inserted into the hair shaft and passes an electrical current through the hair follicle. Although hair itself is dry, it is immersed in a watery environment with a high mineral content below the surface of the skin. The electrical current from the needle causes a chemical reaction and turns the water and salt in the hair follicle into sodium hydroxide (NaOH). This is an extremely corrosive alkali. If you were to put just a drop of pure sodium hydroxide on your skin, it would instantly burn a hole right through. This sodium hydroxide causes the hair follicle to dissolve, causing a complete and permanent destruction of hair growth.

This may sound like a painful way to remove hair… and it is! Even though this is a highly effective procedure, it also has many drawbacks. Treatment with a needle requires a high degree of skill and can be painful since the needle must be inserted multiple times. Penetrating the skin with a needle also increases chances of infection.

As it turns out, it is completely unnecessary to insert a needle to produce sodium hydroxide in the hair follicle. The Vector™ machine works by simply grasping the hair with tweezers and applying a highly conductive gel with silver chloride. Without the electrically conductive gel this process would not work, as hair cannot conduct electricity. Applying silver chloride gel to the hair above the skin allows an electrical current to pass over the non-conductive portion down into the hair follicle.

Though lasers can effectively remove hair, it is not permanent and the treatment is very expensive. Here is some additional information you might want to know about lasers.

Dosage and Directions

Pretreatment

It is highly recommended that all hair be removed from the area by tweezing or waxing before treatment. Hair that grows back will have a much greater moisture and mineral content, highly increasing the effectiveness of the procedure. Electrolysis works by turning the highly moist environment inside the hair shaft into sodium hydroxide. Allow 2-3 weeks for new growth to appear before continuing with the treatment.

Treatment Procedure

The Vector machine should be plugged into a 120 Volt AC outlet before continuing to the next steps.

Place the Unitab patch electrode anywhere on the body where it does not obstruct treatment areas. Attach the included alligator clip to the Unitab electrode and plug the other end into the color-coded input. This is the positive electrode and hair under the patch will not be affected by the treatment
Plug the tweezer into the other color-coded input.
Coat the hair that is to be treated with the conductive gel all the way down to the skin using a Q-tip.
Grasp the hair with the tweezers at the base. Gently pull the hair away from the skin until the tweezers are only touching the hair and not the skin. Since hair cannot conduct electricity, the gel is the medium through which electricity can reach the highly conductive environment inside the hair shaft. So make sure there is a visible layer of gel between the skin and the tweezers, otherwise treatment will be ineffective.
Turn the intensity clockwise to increase the current. Determine a power setting that is comfortable. If the power setting is too high the treatment may be painful and damage the skin. Try to choose a setting so that the needle on the meter is in the middle of the range. This setting is usually optimal for most individuals.
The treatment time for each hair is based on the power setting.

The water and minerals inside the hair shaft turn into sodium hydroxide and the follicle is permanently destroyed. It is best to allow at least 15 minutes before removing the hair after treatment from the skin with tweezers. The hair may also be left in the skin and it will shed on its own, usually within 10-15 days.

Important Information

Hair may begin to grow in an area that was completely cleared several months after treatment. Since human hair grows in cycles, these hairs were resting at the time of the original treatment. It normally takes 3-4 months for all the hairs to go through a complete growth cycle. Continue treating the area when enough hair is present. After each treatment you will notice a reduction in hair growth. This reduction is permanent and will compound until there is no hair growing from the skin.
If the skin is scabbing excessively after treatment, then you are over treating. Reduce the power setting until you find a comfortable level. The treatment is most effective when you feel a stinging sensation, but the treatment can be very painful if the power is turned all the way up. This setting is normally used for individuals who have a high resistance to current.
The Unitab electrodes are reusable. After each use, rinse the adhesive side with warm water, then place back on the plastic sheet for storage. If you don't do this right after removing the patch it will dry out and may not be reused. The normal life expectancy of the patch is 10 uses.
Always be sure to maintain an adequate gel level on the hair. If the gel dries then it will fail to conduct current. If your skin is very dry then you may need to put a dab of gel under the patch as well. If you are not feeling a slight stinging sensation, that's a sign that the gel may be dry.

Warnings

For external use only. Do not use if pregnant or if using a pacemaker. Before undertaking any treatment, always carefully plan the areas in which hair is to be removed. Electrolysis will result in permanent destruction of the hair follicle and is irreversible. Do not attempt to exceed the appropriate power level. Excessive power applied to any area being treated may result in burns, scabbing, scarring, and other types of permanent skin damage. Always unplug the device after hair removal session to avoid charging the unit. Do not use while bathing. Do not use near or place in water. Keep away from children.
