Maca (Lepidium meyenii) Maca is renowned for its tonifying (strengthening) and regulating effect upon the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, a major hormonal communication system within the body. This hormonal-balancing action is associated with its reputation for enhancing libido and sexual vitality in both men and women. Also called "Peruvian Ginseng,” Maca increases energy and vitality and supports a positive mood and sense of wellbeing. It is considered an ‘adaptogen,’ a category of herbs and nutrients that strengthen our stamina and improve overall endurance and health. Maca is an important staple of the indigenous peoples of the Andes and has been cultivated as a starch crop since pre-Incan times. Studies have demonstrated the ability of Tribulus to enhance testosterone production and thus improve sex drive in both men and women. It has also been shown to improve functioning of erectile tissue (in women, erectile tissue is located within the clitoris). Nitric oxide is a vasodilator (compound that relaxes the blood vessels) which can improve blood flow, including to sensitive genital tissues. Mucuna (Mucuna pruriens) has a long history of traditional use as an aphrodisiac, especially in Brazil and India. Mucuna has been shown to increase levels of testosterone and growth hormone (GH), the latter increase due to its action upon dopamine production. Dopamine is an important brain neurotransmitter that Mucuna has demonstrated the ability to significantly increase levels of. Dopamine stimulates release of growth hormone and inhibits secretion of prolactin (both from the pituitary). Growth hormone declines quite markedly as we age; therefore, increasing GH levels is generally desirable. Improved GH levels are associated with enhanced wellbeing and improved sexual function and reproductive health. Higher prolactin levels, however, are associated with erection difficulties in men and PMS symptoms in women, including bloating and breast tenderness.
