Description

What Is Ginkgo? (Ginkgo biloba)

The Ginkgo tree is one of the oldest living species of trees on the planet, dating back over 300 million years, and is even referred to as a "living fossil." It is most renowned for its ability to help with circulation, memory, and cognitive function.

Ginkgo leaf has been shown to improve circulation to the brain which, in turn, elevates oxygen levels. This boosts the brain’s metabolism of glucose, its primary source of fuel, thereby enhancing mental focus and improving concentration.

Diminished cerebral circulation can result in vertigo, ringing in the ear, Alzheimer symptoms, forgetfulness, and even depression. Depression in the elderly may not be as much a neurotransmitter issue as it is a symptom of cerebral vascular insufficiency. Ginkgo may be a beneficial consideration for all of these situations.

Ginkgo improves circulation in other parts of the body as well, making it useful for those who suffer from Raynaud's syndrome, from circulation problems due to diabetes, or for anyone with compromised circulation. Ginkgo helps improve overall energy and vitality through enhanced delivery of nutrients from improved circulation.

Ginkgo may also strengthen synaptic transmissions by providing the brain with essential flavonoid compounds. Flavonoids are plant-based antioxidants which protect against free-radical damage and which also strengthen blood vessels, especially capillaries.

Ginkgo also decreases 'blood stickiness' (platelet aggregation) which may be a beneficial feature for individuals prone to clots; however, it is contraindicated for those already on blood thinner medications (e.g., Warfarin, coumadin). Because of its potential effects upon bleeding, Ginkgo should be discontinued at least 36 hours prior to any surgery, including dental work.

      Answer:

The information available in the literature indicates that this reaction occurred with a combination product, making it difficult to know whether it was unequivocally due to Ginkgo. It is also extremely rare.

According to the Mayo Clinic: "Allergy or hypersensitivity to Ginkgo biloba or members of the Ginkgoaceae family may occur. A severe reaction, called Stevens-Johnson syndrome, which includes skin blistering and sloughing-off, has been reported with use of a combination product. There may be cross-sensitivity to ginkgo in people allergic to urushiols (mango rind, poison sumac, poison ivy, poison oak, cashews), and an allergic cross-reaction has been reported in a person allergic to poison ivy."

Ginkgo fruit and seeds can cause severe skin allergy and irritate the mucous membrane. Do not consume Ginkgo seeds.

Most commercial preparations, including Ginkgo extract from Natural Wellbeing, are prepared from the leaf. Our preparation does not use acetone or other solvents, as do many concentrated & standardized Gingko extracts on the market. Natural Wellbeing provides a full-spectrum, non-standardized Ginkgo leaf extract.
