Description
What is Kudzu? (Pueraria lobata)
Kudzu has been used for centuries for alcohol-related conditions, including reducing alcohol cravings and withdrawal side effects. Several animal studies have demonstrated its anti-alcohol effects, and a small clinical trial (human) showed that an extract of Kudzu root reduced alcohol consumption in heavy drinkers.1
Kudzu's anti-alcohol effects are attributed to isoflavone compounds; in particular, one called puerarin. Though its mechanism of action in reducing alcohol cravings is unclear, it is thought that peurarin may have an effect upon alcohol metabolism and neurotransmitter reward circuits in the brain.
In addition to reducing alcohol cravings and withdrawal symptoms, Kudzu may also provide relief for migraines and cluster headaches, and menopause symptoms including hot flashes. Its menopause-related benefits are primarily associated with phytoestrogenic isoflavones, including daidzein and daidzin which are also found in Red Clover and Soy. Kudzu, Soy, and Red Clover are all members of the Fabaceae (pea) family, notably rich in isoflavones.
Kudzu root has also been used for diabetes. In traditional Chinese medicine, it is often used for tinnitus (ringing in the ear) and vertigo, and is considered one of the "50 fundamental herbs."
