What is Spirulina?
Spirulina is a microscopic, blue-green cyanobacterium (sometimes considered an algae) that grows in warm water, alkaline volcanic lakes, fresh-water ponds, lakes and in some controlled environments. Due to its high chlorophyll content, Spirulina typically turns lakes and ponds in which it grows a dark blue-green. Blue-green algae are believed to be one of the first living organisms on the earth and may have existed as long as 3.6 billion years ago. It is speculated that algae may have helped produce the oxygen in the atmosphere allowing all other life on earth to evolve.
Spirulina is considered a ‘super food’ or a balanced whole food because it provides a good source of protein, vitamins, minerals, trace elements, enzymes, amino acids, betacarotene, gamma linolenic acid and chorophyll. Spirulina is especially rich in the basic components of human nutrition, including protein amino acids and Vitamin B12. Spirulina has more iron than beef, balances blood sugar levels and pH, and helps our body naturally detoxify. It has been a superfood source since ancient times, reportedly used by the Aztecs. It is still a cultural food enjoyed by the peoples who live on the banks of Lake Chad in Africa, where alga Spirulina has been an ingredient of their daily diet for several hundred years.
Spirulina can be especially beneficial for individuals who choose a plant-based diet.
How does Spirulina work?
Spirulina is high in protein and contains all of the required essential amino acids, along with many other nutrients in a form that is easily absorbed and utilised by the human body. It also contains an easy-to-absorb form of iron.
Research shows Spirulina not only stimulates the immune system, it actually enhances the body's ability to generate new blood cells. Spirulina has shown in studies to enhance the immune system, bone marrow stem cells, macrohages, T-cells and natural killer cells, spleen and thymus glands. In animals, it has been shown to increase disease resistance, and is being studied as an alternative to over used antibiotics.
Is Spirulina really a high source of protein?
Yes. Spirulina contains 3 times more protein by weight than beef, and 12 times more digestible protein.
Why is Spirulina considered a superfood?
According to the World Health Organization, Spirulina is considered an interesting food for multiple reasons, including that it is rich in iron and protein, and can be administered to children without any risk.
